The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities abroad, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an opportunity to grow for toilets and bidet seats, in contrast to its "base" markets in Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto was recording Toto words to ensure the future generations would be able to read the words. Many words were replaced by foreign ones. For example dui, which was Bengali for verandah, was used.

Origins

The early history of Toto that began in 1917, mirrored Japan's rapid economic growth. In the early years of its existence, the company produced products to meet the demands of modern, contemporary urban housing. To do this, it used the first tunnel kiln in the country to make ceramics in a continuous flow. It also pioneered the use automation to control production, which allows for greater efficiency and consistency.

The company began expanding its operations overseas in the late 1980s to take advantage of new markets and sales opportunities. The company established the Cera Trading Company to import and market other manufacturers' products in order to enhance its own line of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy increased sales and expanded the company's market share in the world.

In the late 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis to research and development of water-related household appliances. It also improved its system of distribution to better serve customers and improve profit. The company also employed the just-in time approach in its supply chain management as well as sales program. This led to a higher level of satisfaction of customers.

Toto continued to innovate toilet technology. The latest toilet, for example it has a powerful tornado flush that is more ecologically green than traditional toilets. The company also uses recycled water in its production process and has a green purchasing policy. In addition to toilets Toto manufactures bathtubs and faucets, as well as hand dryers that are more efficient in terms of energy consumption than standard models.

The company's first museum opened in 2015, and it has exhibitions on Toto's seminal products and their development as well as its group companies (all related to ceramics), history of plumbing and other products such as bath units and, in a separate gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum has bathrooms with a WASHLET and other toilet innovations.

Before forming Toto, members of the group did session work for a variety of musicians. Boz Scaggs' album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich as well as guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather and drummer Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also performed on albums by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

With a name as evocative as Asia, you would expect the group to be prog kings and queens however, it's actually a pretty straight forward rock band. The band was initially four-piece, and released two albums that were self-titled in 1979 and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. Although the band have a wide range of musical backgrounds their biggest hit was in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a massive blockbuster, but not without issues. The record companies put Toto under pressure to deliver a hit single or else they would pull them. Luckily for Toto they did and they did it with the help of the smash hit single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is the result of their previous experience. Before forming the group, the band members were session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their distinctive sound has become the standard of '80s music, influencing many contemporary artists.

This album starts off hard, with songs such as Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write fantastic AOR songs that slowly work their hooks into your. However, the album also includes some more mellow, jazzy tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. And the album ends with Great Expectations, a song that mixes folk with distorted AOR and should sound totally wrong, but works amazingly well.

After Toto IV The band's fortunes took a turn towards the negative. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band had to go through several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band following drug-related charges. The band continued to play with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It was not as well-liked as IV. However, the band still managed to release another chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. The album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was the first album featuring the new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet style of previous albums. It was a stronger, more consistent effort with an edge that was stronger than Hydra. The more experimental sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the development of the group. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased virtuosity was reflected by the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was more refined, sharper and less cloying than on previous performances.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a new studio album a few months later and then embarked on a tour around the world to help promote it. During this period, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demos and tapes in search of a new record featuring songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released in 2001 and released as a double album called Then and Now. It was the first album by the band without one single track titled "A". The album also contained an previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was not a commercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which restricted his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes along with the other original members of Asia - Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility of officially reforming the band. This lineup, with the exception of Howe (who was a member of Yes at the time) was eventually referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also had a special appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
